Who am I? We must all satisfactorily answer this question to our nagging selves sooner than later in our lives. All of our associations are influenced by the knowledge of who we are. The people we attract, befriend, date, and marry are a mirror of who we are; a reflection of all we deem important, valuable, and sacred about our lives. Marriage is not one to allow you to remain unchanged through the life of the union; it’s core function is to merge you into one person with your partner. Knowing who we are becomes important in order to guard ourselves against marrying our lives to irreconcilable differences. How can we begin to unravel the inner workings of ourselves? How do we sort who we are from who we think we are and who people say we are?

I have realized that understanding ourselves is a journey that is going to take our entire lifetimes. But the journey must begin now. If we look, we are bound to discover vast depths of essence in our hearts. From the day we are born, our lives have been weaving a beautiful quilt and our unique experiences continue to cycle us through a process of birth and renewal. We are simply beautiful beings of history.

As individuals, we have to sincerely believe in the foundational truth of “there is a lot to me!” Our lives are not just a lot of drama or nothingness but a lot of beauty, and significance, and strength, and weaknesses, and substance, and so on. It is important to continue to fill in the blanks for our selves on a strictly consistent basis.

It is inevitable that we change. We are all undone. As our lives complete each cycle of birth and renewal, it, in a sense, completes a reinvention of who we are. The challenge is to keep up. It is very important to be on top of our growth and our changes by asking questions of our selves like “Do I like this new behavior?”,“Am I comfortable with this new attitude?”, and “Is my walk reflecting God’s heart for my life”. The more approvals and denials we make of our struggling desires and self, the more defined we become to our selves. Let us charge our selves with the duty of ensuring that who we are becoming daily is consistent with who God has purposed us to be; meaningful! In turn we will be empowered to make better decisions about who we want to be ONE with.
