An open door

“Moses accepted the invitation.” [Exodus 2.21 NLT]

What was it that caused the invitation to be made in the first place?

Moses’ life was in danger and he had fled into the desert for refuge. Some of us may have experienced a similar situation, where extreme rejection was on the menu, yet previously, we had been welcomed with open arms.

This change may have been, as it was with Moses, our own fault. However, when we confess our sins and faults, God freely forgives them and then, like the Good Shepherd He is, He surrounds our circumstances and our future paths with His goodness and mercy.

As a result of an uncontrolled temper, Moses found himself in an isolated and inhospitable environment. However, as we will discover, he did what he could and good came out of it.

Over a long period of time, the seven daughters of Reuel were hindered by the people of the land from getting a regular supply of water for themselves and their livestock.

One day, Moses, like the Lord Jesus, was sitting beside a well [John 4.4-6]. As Moses was resting, the shepherd girls came to the well with their thirsty sheep.

Once again, the local mob arose and began to push their sheep away from the water, however, the outcome this time was different. Moses stood up, went to where they were and forcibly chased the false shepherds away.

Moses then assisted them to get water for themselves, their animals and their father’s household.

Jesus spoke to the woman at the well about living water, which eventually benefited her, her entire family and all the people in the city of Samaria.

Moses stayed where he was and the seven daughters of Reuel, the priest or prince of Midian went on their way rejoicing.

When they arrived home, their father knew that something good had happened and he was only too glad to invite Moses, the deliverer, into his house, where he received the ministry of hospitality.

When the men of Samaria were aware that that woman had been radically changed, they also wanted the Deliverer to abide in their village.

What can we learn from these situations? When you see something happening that is not right, do not, like the Priest and the Levite, cross over and walk away on the other side. Rather, like Moses and the Good Samaritan, put out your hand and do what you can.

Having the courage of his convictions radically altered Moses’ life. The people of Samaria were never the same as the result of the Lord’s work in their midst.

God wants to use us to change and bless our current environment. What do we need to do?

Live a natural life and when something happens that is alien to what God would like, do the good that you can and trust Him to bless you with another place of rest and a harvest in an area that was previously tightly closed. [David McArdle]
