Psalm 89:20-37 – The Active Hand of God
Key Verses:
- 20: “I have found my servant David; with my holy oil I have anointed him.” – In today’s verses the psalmist is writing as if these words were spoken by God to Samuel. They are to serve as a reminder of God’s promise to David so that the people of Israel, while struggling through war, conflict and exile, could continue to rely on God’s faithfulness.
- 21: “My hand shall always be with him.” – God is saying that He will always be there to guide, lead, comfort, console, embrace and support David throughout his life. This is a promise of an active presence.
- 24: “My faithfulness and steadfast love shall be with Him.” – No matter what happens, no matter how far David drifts from the path God wants him to follow, and no matter what sin David commits, God will remain faithful and steadfast in His love.
- 29: “I will establish his line forever and his throne as long as the heavens endure.” – A promise insured by Jesus Christ, born as a descendant of David, now sitting at the right hand of God, establishing forever His kingdom.
- 34: “I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips.” – These are comforting words, especially during difficult times when all else seems lost.
- Do you feel God’s hand in your life? Do you recognize that this promise is for all of us? That God cares and reaches out to each of us with His guiding hand? In what ways have you experienced the hand of God in your life? Has He lead you back to the flock after you have strayed? Did He carry you when you were weak? Did He comfort you when you were sick or lonely? Did He instruct or teach you when you lacked understanding? Did He correct or admonish you when you became too proud or self-righteous? He promises to be actively involved in your life. Can you look around and see Him there?
- Have you experienced God’s faithfulness and steadfast love? Has it been difficult at times to find examples of His faithfulness in your life? Have there been times that you have felt completely isolated and separated from God? Once you have moved through those difficult times, once you have been able to look back and evaluate your life, do you see how active and involved He truly was all along? That He had never left your side? Do you find an assurance in this promise that will help to lift you from any despair and hopelessness you might encounter?
- How does the promise of David’s throne enduring forever affect your life? Do you feel apart of that kingdom? Is this Psalm not more about establishing God’s kingdom here on earth than it is David’s? A kingdom represents and establishes an area of influence and control. Do you see how, through Jesus Christ, God’s kingdom has left the limits of geographical territories and entered the heavenly realm of eternal glory? What role do you play in the building of His kingdom? Would God continue to be faithful and steadfast in His love for you if He did not have a special purpose for you to fulfill? Are you a “kingdom builder?”
- This week we are looking at issues surrounding the building God’s kingdom. Do you have preconceived ideas on how His kingdom would look? Have you established barriers in your life and faith community that keep His kingdom from growing? Whose agenda, yours or God’s, dominates your life and your schedule? Do you have a compassionate heart for people seeking spiritual dimensions to their lives, even if they are looking in the wrong places?
The psalmist reminds us of the promises that God provided David as he grew into his position as King of Israel. These promises were not established uniquely for David, however. Instead, they extend to all of us through His grace and unending faithfulness. His hand will always be in our lives, actively involved in helping us become the disciples He wants us to be. His love is proven by the sacrifice of His son, Jesus Christ; and His kingdom will endure forever because He has said it will be.
