Save Thyself

And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be the Christ, the chosen of God. And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. Luke 23:35,37

Jesus Christ did not save himself, He gave himself. The people around the cross thought that his self-sacrifice was a sign of weakness but it took the greatest display of strength ever for Jesus Christ to stay on that cross. And the motivation for that strength was incredible love, the love of God - love for the very ones who were hurling insults at him in his hours of agony, and the love for the Father displayed in his obedience to his will.
Men often are confused by pure love shown in sacrifice. Self-centeredness and self-promotion are readily understood and even applauded as the way to success. When love is poured out in self-abandonment, people are often confounded.
The people did not know what to do with Jesus Christ. Taunting him to save himself was more for their idle curiousity than for his comfort. They did not understand that if he had indeed "saved himself", then their opportunity for eternal life would have been snuffed out. "The chosen of God" chose the will of God to the glory of the Father and the Son.
