The dead are dead
The survivors are dead
The slaves are free
Yet the war lives on
A century plus
In the hearts
And minds
Of men

We walk on hallowed ground
Over battlefield, hill, and glade
We count as numerous the graves
On Lee’s lawn
And stand by marble Lincoln
Cold as ice
As he sits
In judgment of his city
Through cherry blossoms of time

We play the war still
Over and over again
With cannon, musket, horse and man
As if we are not finished
And it’s not over yet.

North against South
Man against man
Brother against brother
Father against son
Color against color

All are created equal
And this is our promise to God
And country
And to die for if need be.

And until it is true
In the hearts
And minds
Of men
Mankind’s wars will never be over
And we shall learn
And never forget
The cost in blood
