Have you ever heard the saying “April showers bring May flowers”? Have you ever thought that the saying might have something to teach you?
Like many people, I have struggled with the realization that just because I became a Christian does not mean that my life will be perfect. In fact, more often than not, I have many more hardships to deal with than I did before. This used to make me frustrated and for awhile I became so frustrated that I walked away from my faith. My thinking was that if the Bible talks about God’s unfailing love so much, why was my life so hard? Wasn’t he supposed to protect me from money trouble, from being hurt, from loneliness? Then one day I finally got it.
God allows “rainy seasons” in our lives for two main reasons. The first is that we ourselves caused them. For instance, if we touched a hot stove, is it the stove’s fault we got burned or our fault since we were the ones that turned it on? The same thing applies when we disobey God and end up struggling. Maybe we don’t have any money to pay our bills because we spent it shopping for new clothes instead. Maybe we are lonely because we push other people away.
The second main reason that God has allows us to go through a “rainy season” is that He is trying to get us to grow. Here’s an example, I have a friend who has turned away from God. This has caused me to go through not only a rainy season, but an entire hurricane. Yet, God is using this time in my life to draw me closer to Him, to point out the dirt in my own life that is causing me to get root rot. Do I want my friend to come back to God? Do I want this hardship to be over? Of course, but until that happens, I will continue to draw closer to God.
So, the next time you go through a rainy season, remember that God uses that time in our lives to equip us with the things we need in order to bloom more beautiful for Him.
