Psalm 24 – King of Glory
Background:
This Psalm of David could have been written to celebrate the moving of the Ark of the Covenant into the city of Jerusalem, which is why it is being used in conjunction with Monday’s scripture lesson. As you read these verses, open your heart to the song that is within you that celebrates each time you enter into God’s house of worship.
Key Verses:
- 1: “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it.” – God is Creator, the Master Architect, of all creation. He lays claim to everything He has created.
- 3: “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?” – Who should climb up and reach out to God in worship?
- 4: “Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.” – When we honestly and completely dedicate our lives to Jesus Christ we are made clean, redeemed by Him, so that we can approach God in purity.
- 5: “They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from the God of their salvation.” – We have been exonerated from our sins and richly blessed by His love.
- 6: “Such is the company of those who seek Him.” – We are to seek, search out, and actively pursue God in everything we do.
- 7: “Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up…that the King of glory may come in.” – Remove all barriers, open all barricades, and allow God into your life.
- 10: “Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.” – There is only one God. He has created. He rules. He loves.
- Do you celebrate in the wonders of God’s creation? Do you maintain an attitude of wonder and awe at all times? Are you amazed by His creativity revealed in everything you see or experience? If you have become hardened or insensitive to God’s creation around you, what steps can you take to renew your sense of amazement? Since all things have been created by God, does He not deserve our constant praise and admiration for who He is and what He has done?
- Do you have “clean hands and a pure heart?” Why is that important? Why do we need redemption or justification in order to worship God? Why can’t He accept us just as we are, dirty and soiled? Is it because our sins stand in the way, turning our focus away from Him and towards our selves? Does this illustrate how impossible it is for us to reach God as long as we strive to get there on our own power? Do you see that with every step closer we take we will always find ourselves slipping backward into sin? Do you see, again, how amazing God’s grace truly is? How Christ’s sacrifice for you has given you full access to the King of Glory?
- Are you ascending “the hill of the Lord?” Do you see the importance of seeking Him in all things at all times? Do you recognize that we are not to sit back and wait for God to come to us, but that we are to climb up and reach out to Him in everything we do? Isn’t that how it should be? Should we not want to be as close to His loving presence as we can?
- Our lessons this week celebrate God’s creation and the plans He has for our lives. Do you acknowledge that God has created all things, including you? Do you find hope and encouragement in the understanding that He has purpose and intent for your life? Do you earnestly seek God in all aspects of your life, searching for ways to fulfill your destiny as a child of God? Do you base your identity and purpose in your relationship with Jesus Christ? Do you stand up in defense and bear witness to God’s truth in the world?
David’s psalm calls us into constant worship of the God of all creation. As we strive to seek Him, to draw close to Him, we are lifted into His presence by His amazing grace. He has created us, blessed us, loved us, and nurtured us so that we can lift up our heads and allow the King of glory into our lives.
