Understanding, forgiveness, and compassion are among the long list of what puts the "human" in humanity. Love, the essence of human need, cannot thrive without these.
In our struggle with the demons within, love, as well as everlasting faith, are our best weapons. Love and faith give us hope which is our strongest shield in the battle.
Humanity right now is crying out in distress and we wonder how we got to such a distressing place. Yet, we've been there before. Could it be that we have failed to rid ourselves of that which harms ourselves, each other and above all, our souls? The hard truth is that we have.
We have failed to rid ourselves of that which straggles kindness and compassion, which in turn chokes the very roots of love and faith. Yet, we cling to it everyday without fail, thought or remorse. It has become so entangled in our daily routines we don't even realize we're doing it. It has become part of what we are and when we're proactive in it we unleash the demon of misunderstanding which unleashes anger which leads to hatred which is certain to lead to our demise.
There is a scene in the Bible when a crowd of people are surrounding a woman who they are ready to stone to death for the crime of prostitution. Jesus steps in and says,
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." He begins writing in the sand (presumably the sins of the stone holders.) One by one they drop their stones and leave.
It's difficult for us to see our own faults and we even try to deny their existence. Yet, when we fail to realize our shortcoming and indiscretions, we cast a stone. That stone becomes the catalyst that turns the tide of the battle and scores one for the demons.
Perhaps, since we've done it since childhood, throughout our teens and into adulthood
we are accustomed to it's company. Maybe, getting rid of it would be a horrendous struggle, yet it would be our greatest accomplishment.
So seemingly benign, it is the root of all evil - judgment. (Prejudice - pre-judgment)
It starts when we take it upon ourselves to decided who's bad or unworthy - who should be punished. Without taking a step in the other person's shoes we make a judgment call which gives rise to negative emotions within ourselves, which in turn causes us to act on those emotions. It never occurs to us that we are playing God when we do this. The Bible says, "Judge NOT, least ye be judged."
"Least ye be judged." I, personally don't want to be judged. If what I have to do is
not judge others, well, I sure am going to try. I guess a good place to start is to think about the words I'm saying when I pray "...and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us."
