Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday September 19, 2006

I came across a statement that makes a lot of sense, but most of us never think along these lines. The same truth in the statement has been stated in higher sounding terms, but I like this one, for I am a simple country boy:

"The more you do of what you're doing, the more you will get of what you've got." Brian Tracy

Mr. Tracy's article was on the idea of learning to use our God given imagination, though he did not so state in such terms.

Most children have and use vivid imaginations, often making up stories that would do an adult proud. A wise parent should learn to teach the child the difference between using this gift from God for good or for evil. Creative people know the importance of labeling writing for instance truthfully as to whether the story/article is biographical or fiction. Often alleged biography is a mix of truth and the way the author wishes his or her story happened. More and more people are learning everyday of the foolishness of "Imaginative Resumes." This lesson is usually learned at a steep price.

Just yesterday I read of a rising star in the ministry who was called to the pastorate of a large rather influential church, on the basis of three things. His track record of apparent success, a strong resume, and the glowing recommendation of another preacher deemed to be such a star that he had been the front runner for the presidency of the convention to which each belonged. After he began his ministry at the new church, someone investigated the 'facts' listed in his resume. A few calls and bam, his life was mostly a fabrication, the life he had imagined, but had not actually lived. Even his education credentials were somewhat fabricated. The inquiry discovered that his mentor, the already risen star in his group, also operated on fabricated educational credentials. This fabrication seems to be rampant today.

Why do people with great ability, for both of these men are light years ahead of most humans as to intellect and other gifts that help in leading people, misuse their imagination? In their chosen group, the institutions therein do not require academic degrees in order to serve; a simple demonstration of the power of the Holy Spirit on the life will suffice.

Imagination and faith are closely related, when they are honestly blended you have what is called in scripture a 'vision' a clear mental picture in your mind, felt strongly in your heart and this dream of better things, better lives etc becomes a driving force in your own life and in the lives of those whom you influence.

Tragically most of us settle for the doing of what we have been doing and wonder why we get the same old same old. Have you considered asking the Lord to touch your imagination? Honestly?
