YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN


I have always looked forward to visiting my husband’s family. Bob’s parents live in the country surrounded by nature. There are 2 dairy farms in walking distance. It’s a little slower paced life in that small town of Indiana. It is very friendly and peaceful.
One of the things I use to look forward to was to go see Bob’s grandmother. I felt like a little child going to see her own grandmother. She always treated me like I was her own grandchild.
I remember one special day that we went to see her. She was staying with her son, Lambert, who is Bob’s uncle. We drove up the gravel road that was surrounded by corn fields. I thought it was just beautiful to see the tall green plants growing in neat rows.
We walked through the back door into the kitchen. Guess who was at the table? That’s right, Grandma Scheele. She was sitting there peeling and cutting up peaches. They were preparing them to be canned. She was probably near 90 years old at the time. She greeted us with a big smile and a kiss for each of us.
I had told her how I did not know how to can, sew, and such things that ladies use to know about. She just encouraged me by saying, “You’re never too old to learn something new.” She was right. I am learning new things all the time. I just need to be more like Grandma Scheele and just try my best even if I fail.
I could never get away without her telling the stories of her girlhood, like doing chores and going to school. Her mind was sharp. She could quote poems from her schools days. I wish my mind was as sharp as hers.
It’s kind of sad now when we go to Indiana to visit family. Grandma Scheele is no longer with us. She passed away a few months shy of her 100th birthday. I miss her sweet warm smile and her German accent. I think I will miss her stories and her encouragement the most. I sure could use her telling me that I’m never too old to learn today.
