I know you’re afraid. I am, too. Everything happened so fast. Now they say we’re at war. What does that mean? At war with whom? For how long? And how should we act in the meantime?

The government says act normal. To feel secure. But that’s hard to do isn’t it, when there are so many insecure symbols that surround us like an enemy we can’t really identify, a staggering economy, the lingering grief over all we’ve lost and the fear of future attacks. I know. I feel it, too.


So here we are with all our fear and ultimately a decision to make—to give in and give up or to hold on and go on. There’s not much in between.


I thought about giving in and giving up for a minute. I thought, “What’s the use in feeling safe when we can be invaded and attacked so easily and devastatingly?” But that was my grief talking. I know that now.


Giving in and giving up is not a true option. It’s a lie. It’s a lie that says God has forsaken us, and that there’s a power greater than him in control.


You and I both know that’s not true. We have too much proof to the contrary to believe that. God would never leave us, especially not at a time like this. He knows how much we need him—how frightened we are, how vulnerable we feel.


Everything in this world suddenly feels so uncertain. It always has been. We just didn’t know it. But there’s one thing that has always been and still is certain—God’s undying love for us. There’s total security in that. All we have to do is trust it.


The next time you’re feeling frightened by all that’s happening in the world, remember God’s love and how many times it has come through for you in the past, no matter how dark things seemed at the time. He was there for you and me then, and he is here for you and me now.


When we trust it, God’s love makes us totally secure.
