The Lord’s Prayer is a model prayer from which we can learn many lessons. The disciples doubtless had seen the prayer life of their Master and wanted to emulate Him ask asked Him to teach them how to pray.
We shall examine this prayer by looking at the key phrases to embelish our knowledge of wg=hat they mean to us in our prayer life.

I have identified the following key phrases which we shall be looking at:

1. Our Father Who art in heaven
2. Hallowed Be Your Name
3. Your Kingdom Come
4. Your will Be done On earth as it is in heaven
5. Give us this day our daily bread
6. Forgive us our sins
7. As we forgive those who sin against us
8. Deliver us from evil
9. For yours is the kingdom, the power and glory.




The Lord’s Prayer1-Our Father Who art in heaven

Notice the beginning, “Our Father”. This is a recognition that firstly, we pray to the Father in Jesus name- not to Jesus or the Holy Spirit.
Secondly, “our” implies a Father belonging to me and others of the same family. In other words we need to recognise that we are in a relationship with God and his children.
“Which art in heaven”

Although some people have a good memory of their earthly father there are many who do not have a good memory of their earthly father. As human beings they are flawed in one way or the other. So we need to remind ourselves that we are talking of our flawless Father- the one in heaven.

This should give a confidence and reassurance to start with.
He is the Father of Light from whom all good and perfect gifts flow.
'If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.'
All through the Old Testament He is referred to as God, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. He was not so intimate to any one for them to call Him ‘Father’. How privileged we are! He is not just God but My Father, our Father.
There is no other religion in which the believers know their god as Father. How blessed we are.

Again this implies that I am His child- not from natural procreation but from a spiritual regeneration. My new birth entitles me to the Fatherhood of God.

This was why Paul said, we are able to cry Abba Father
This Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. John5:20
He raises the dead and gives them life, (John5:21) He judges no one but has entrusted all judgment to His Son (John5:22)
He has life in Himself (John5:26)

Jesus came in the Father’s Name (John5:43). This Father sent Jesus and testifies concerning Him.(John5:37) On Him He placed the seal of approval on Jesus.(John6:27). Only Jesus has seen this Father (John6:46). This Father not only loves Jesus, but loves us as He loves Him (John10:17, -17:23). Jesus and this Father are one.(John10:30) He put all things under the power of Jesus (Johm13:3). Jesus is the way to this Father (John14:5). Jesus will do whatever we ask the Father in His name. (John14:13) He sent the Holy Spirit (John14:26) Everything that belongs to ‘the Father’ is Jesus’(John16:15). He is a righteous Father (John17:25). He raised Jesus from the Dead(Acts5:20)
