“Like a city whose walls are broken down, is a man who lacks self control.” Proverbs 25:28 NIV:

Whether it be spending money or eating too much, a lack of self control can cause you trouble. Spending beyond your income leads to debt, and could lead to financial disaster. We all know this but consumer debt is a major problem.

Eating beyond your need causes obesity. Eating things you should not eat, because they taste good, is a primary cause of disease. Doing so too often or on a regular basis can bring an early death.

Many misguided Christians think that it is okay to eat whatever they want to eat. They think that God has an appointed time for them to die, and nothing they do can change that. So they think that it does not matter what they do, as long as it is not blatant sin.

Last night I succumbed to temptation and ate something I should not have eaten. As a health minister I knew I should not eat it. I knew it was there, so I gave in to temptation.

This morning I woke up at my accustomed time of four AM and attempted to write. My mind was so cloudy that I could not think clearly enough to know where to start. I lay back down and prayed. I could not go back to sleep but I could not do more than pray.

I am not trying to down play the importance of prayer. I asked God to clear my mind just this one time and forgive me for my indiscretion of the night before. I praise God that I can now think clearly enough to write. I can still feel some of the other effects of eating the things I should not have eaten.

Years of experience have shown me that if I ignore self control and eat those kinds of thing every day I will soon develop arthritis in my joints. I will experience the pain. If you think pain and suffering is a test from God, you are wrong. They are a consequence of wrong choices.

It is easy to blame God when our bodies fail us, after a life of doing things our own way, and ignoring what God has to say. We run to the doctor for a magic potion to make us better. When that fails we say it must be Gods will, that we are sick. NOT!

It is God’s will that you live in health. While it is true that God can use your illness to serve his purposes, He could have used your radiant health just as well, perhaps even better.

Father God, in the name of Jesus, I ask you to work in our lives and help us to wise up and use the brain you gave us for more than a hat rack. Lord we need self control. Help us Lord to just say no to the things we know will harm us. Please Lord, in all areas of life, we need this gift, if we are to be the servants You want us to be. Thank You Lord, amen.
