“Love as I have”

A beggar in an abandoned alley,
Cold, hungry and tired.
A little girl who’s wearing rags,
Her daddy just got fired.

A boy who lives in a broken home,
His momma drinks too much.
Cuts and bruises on his face and arm,
She forgot to fix him a lunch.

A teenage girl who’s made mistakes,
She now has a baby to feed.
Her parents kicked her out of the house,
And now they’re both in need.

A mother with three small kids,
When you see them they look okay.
But back at home on the kitchen table,
They’ve got more bills than they can pay.

A child turned out into the streets,
The world seems big and wide.
A man whose wife just died last week,
He’s thinking suicide.

To all these people the world is cruel,
It just brushes them away.
It offers no help, and gives no love,
Would rather not deal with it today.

“Maybe tomorrow” some of us say,
But tomorrow might be too late.
“I don’t have time” we sometimes think,
“They’ll just have to wait.”

This is the problem with our world,
We don’t help our own.
We don’t pick them up, don’t give them hope,
We just drive by and go home.

But what if by chance we’d stop and think,
“What would Jesus do?”
He’d stop and help, show them love,
And maybe we should too.

He’d invite the beggar into His home,
Maybe give that girl a new dress.
Bandage the boy’s aching cuts,
Feed the baby, let them come in and rest.

He’d give the mother some money,
To pay the bills that just stack up.
He’d take the child and the man inside,
Comfort them and fill their cup.

So if we all just took the time,
Out of our already busy day.
If we’d stop to help and show them love,
Perhaps they’ll see the way.

It would all be worth it,
When one day we see the Son.
Look into His face and hear Him say:
“Well done, good and faithful one.”
