There are those today who are diverting attention from what the Word of God says onto something else.

Former Bible-based activities have made way for too many social events which do nothing but entertain the members. Morning prayer has become a Special Breakfast, with sausage, bacon and egg being packaged with a guest speaker. The Night of Prayer has become a Fun and Games Night. Men’s and Women’s events divide the church into two gender-based sections. Such trendiness has crept into the church like an opportunistic mouse.

Two hours spent at the local shopping mall and the believers are not reaching people with the gospel, but socializing at a coffee shop - a Coffee Afternoon given great publicity at the Sunday morning service.

Study of the Bible is replaced at the Wednesday night meeting by focus on a million-selling book “Oh, it has sold a million – therefore it must be good,” the thinking goes.

The world wants the latest and the snazziest fashion, and such thinking is in the church now. We have copied the world’s music, its marketing methods and its rent-a-crowd philosophy.

All of the foregoing non-Bible-based activities are part of the falling away we read of in 2 Thess 2:3. If that is not your local church, then thank God for it.

There has to be passion to do what Jesus instructed in Matthew 28 – making disciples, teaching the people to obey all things that Jesus’ commanded. He didn’t teach anything of what is described in the first four paragraphs of this article.

Generally speaking, there has to be a revolution. There must be a return to what Jesus instructed at the end of Mark – preaching the gospel outside the church, healing the sick, casting out demons. Truth to tell, Mark 16:20 says that is exactly what the disciples and apostles did in Jesus’ name after He had ascended. They preached everywhere. They obeyed Jesus, bringing supernatural results - and that is what the church ought to be doing instead of organizing socials.

The goal ought to be to instruct and equip people to do the ministry of Jesus. Christianity today is as far from the Book of Acts as Planet Earth is from Mars.

The Lord said He would build His church – but only if those running the church allow Him to do it! Perhaps one day Jesus will lose patience.
