Whizz, whirl, buzzzz!
In absolute shock, I watched a beautiful hummingbird flutter around the feeder at the kitchen window. These small delicate creatures always amaze me with the whirling sound of their wings beating so rapidly against the air. However, this day was far different then any other. We were in the midst of a hurricane, not at the beginning when the winds were just picking up or at the tail end when the storm was abating but right slap-dab in the middle of it.
Living in the coastal area of North Carolina, we have to deal the effects of hurricanes before, during and afterwards. But, never before had I seen anything like this. The small graceful creature that could easily fit into the palm of my hand acted as if it was out for a brief snack in the cool of the evening. Fascinated, I simply stood at the sink and watched him flit from around the feeder. Then in a flash, he sped away back to his little nest.
Since that time, I have remembered that moment with great joy and the lessons it taught me. At the height of the storm, my small-feathered friend was totally at peace, perfect peace and went about his merry way as if nothing strange was happening. Few of us have that serenity in the midst of a tempest in our life. Even the men who walked with Jesus day to day fearfully shook when physical storms came upon them.
Matthew 8:23-27: Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
Most of us have not learned the art of resting in His hands knowing that He is with us. When the winds gust around us, we often panic, run for cover and ask the Lord to save us. We feel the need to bring our horrific situation to His attention often forgetting He is totally aware of the howling winds and raging sea. Jesus had the ability to see beyond the storm and rest in His Father’s love. I imagine many times He gazes upon His children shaking His head, wondering when we will learn to rest in Him.
Then there are the times when He justifiably rebukes us for our fear just as He did His disciples that day. We have seen and felt His Presence in even the worst of times. Yet this time it seems different, we don’t feel safe and secure in His arms of love. The winds are blowing and we are afraid. As the seas of life violently throw us back and forth, we scream “Save me, Lord!”
The security of His presence is lost, even though He has never left us before. What a comfort to know that in the midst of our hurricanes, we can continue to trusting in the knowledge that we are loved with an everlasting love that never fails. His promises hold true and He never will leave us.
There are those reading this that can see the storms on the horizon of their life. Press on, secure in the knowledge He is in the boat with you just as much as the day He rode with the disciples. For those who are hanging on for dear life, riding in the storm of the century – allow His peace to settle over you even though you cannot see His plan for your life. He has never lost one of His own yet and He won’t start with you.
Today, in the storms of your life, whatever they are, trust Him. At the height of the tempest, rest in the knowledge that He cares for you. When the winds blow wildly, be at peace in the fact He is watching over you. Fly into the face of your storm knowing His perfect love will carry you to the place of security – the nest of His Presence.
