Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me
That's Discipline!
The shepherd usually has a crook that he uses to discipline the sheep that are stubborn. They may not like it but they need to be checked and kept in line.

In the same way God would discipline us so that we would reflect his glory and praise.
"Stern discipline awaits him who leaves the path; he who hates correction will die."
(Prov. 15:10)

"He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding." (Prov15:32)
"Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him."
(Prov22:15)
"Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. Prov23:13
We live in times when children rule the parents in certain cultures. Children are given rights without corresponding responsibilities. We must maintain God’s rule in our homes and discipline our children appropriately without abusing them. We must avoid disciplining when we are angry and ensure they understand why they are being disciplined.

"No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." (Heb12:11)

Paul recounts the essence of self discipline which is even better than discipline that comes from the outside.
God disciplines us but it is even better if we discipline ourselves.
24"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize." 1Cor9:24-29

Discipline is not palatable but it is beneficial. It brings a harvest of righteousness.
