We live on top of a small hill. The ground surrounding is covered with and full of rocks ranging in size from small pebbles to those that stand taller than a man. A friend upon seeing our place for the first time exclaimed, "But how do you mow your lawn with all these rocks?" The answer, "We don't except for a bare 10 or 12 feet around the house. In later years we did manage to move enough rocks so that we could mow small front and back yards. But with the other acres and acres of them I have beautiful detent: the nicest kind of co-existence. Actually, I love them.

In this time of artificiality and sham, they stand as reminders of what is real and enduring. They expose their size and shape and cut for all to see. No shadowy areas or uncertain nuances to cloud and confuse. You may not like them, but you'll have no difficulty understanding their realnesa and their nature. They are steady and strong and dependable. There is a great deal of shakiness in the world: in relationships, in politics, in governments, etc., and to me the rocks symbolize the undergirding strength of the mighty Hand that put them there. Even Shakespeare recognized, "sermons in stones and good in everything." Small wonder that David sang, "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer." (II Sam.22:2)

We are counseled to build the house of our life on the rock: honest and real and true obedience to the sayings of Jesus. (Matt.7:24) The church itself was founded on a rock: Peter's confession that Jesus is the Son of the living God. (Matt. 16:18)

In listing the blessings of the Lord, David said, "He brought me up...out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock." (Psalm 42:2) We have some miry clay at our place too, and it symbolizes graphically the clinging, sinking, all-enveloping value system of our undertain world. We try, as we walk, to stay on the rocks and avoid the miry clay to keep our shoes clean. A spiritual walk on the rocks to keep our souls clean would be far more valuable and well-advised.

The lowly rocks, part of God's marvelous creation, speak eloquently to us of His nearness, His strength and His unchanging nature: our Father, our God and the Rock of our salvation. (Psalm 89:26)
