There is more to seasons than meets the eye. There is a spiritual dimension to the stately, steady, unfaltering march of cold and heat, seedtime and harvest. As surely as majestic mountain ranges and expansive oceans attest to God's power and His continued monitoring of His creation--so also do the ever-changing, but unchanging flow of seasons. Beautiful gifts of God--constantly reminding us of His presence.

One of the ways people without the law knew of God's being was, "He left himself not without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness." (Acts 14:17) And way back in the dawn of creation, God himself promised along with the rainbow, "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." (Gen. 8:22)

And what beautiful lessons are mirrored in the progression of the seasons. The gentle, quiet snow covers everything: the ugly, the uneven, the dirty, the unthinkable. It pictures how beautifully and bountifully God's love and forgiveness cover man's failings. "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;" (Isaiah 1:18b) The cold, starry night in its awesome beauty decalres His glory in terms unmistakable. We say the "dead" of winter, but truly it is only the "sleeping" of winter because the warm spring rain will bring abundant life again to the earth. And that's how it is with us. When our short season of life is spent, we leave the scenes of this world behind, to see and be seen no more until, warmed by His love and promise, we reassemble ourelves in the springtime of eternity.

When Martha protested to Jesus that Lazarus would not have died had He not delayed His coming, He said, "I am the resurrection and the life; he that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die." (John 11:25, 26) This is the eternal springtime promise. We see it every year. Nothing is wasted in the glorious economy of creation. Even the seasons speak to us of life and death and things to come--and of the wonderful, caring nature of our Father. The lessons are all there for the seeing eye and the listening heart.
