They are able-bodied, but handicapped. In what way? It’s because many churches fail to do the job of educating the public about Jesus. It makes the task of the few evangelists doubly difficult.

Knock on doors for an hour and you will see the truth of that. In Australia where I live you’ll meet young people who have never even heard of Jesus – let alone the true gospel. To them the Good News is something from Mars!

The older ones know a bit, but by now they are so entrenched in their own (usually incorrect) understanding of Jesus it’s virtually impossible to get them to listen to the truth.

Surely at least fifty per cent of the church’s time and money should be spent on this process of informing re gospel truth. By outward appearance, the time and money devoted to that end is ten per cent or even less.

In that percentage are some who put Christian messages on TV here in Australia, but those messages are so weak they are unlikely to stir anyone.

The other 90 per cent of time and money goes on maintaining buildings used only twice a week. The money is also used to pay pastors, many of whom absolutely refuse to do anything about those perishing in their neighbourhood. More church funds and time goes on conferences, seminars, holy huddles, breakfasts, lunches and dinners, most of which will not help prevent Mr/Mrs Average on Main St from heading for the lake of fire.

There is still this long-held belief that people will flock in their thousands to the church to hear about Jesus. It doesn’t happen. Large memberships often consist of those who hear ear-tickling messages; a false gospel based on what Jesus will do for them - more blessings, bigger house, later-model car, better-paid job. “Yippee, tell me more. Where do I sign?” No problem getting a crowd with that message. When the promised goodies don’t arrive, their faith deflates like a slashed tyre.

That wrong gospel surely produces self-centred Christians who will not risk anything for Jesus – not even handing out a tract! They are not taught the (paraphrased) John F. Kennedy theme of “ask not what Jesus can do for you, but what you can do for Jesus.”

The Lord must be weeping. Are these the “believers” He intended? He bled to give a new life, servant heart, bold attitude; but there is no sign of it in many. If the Apostle Paul were here now he would weep too. When did you last hear a message on trial and tribulation at your church? (Thank God for the exceptions who tell it like the Bible says.)

The only suffering endured by many Christians is if the air conditioner or coffee machine ceases to operate!

Well, dear friend, you can be different. You can swim against the tide. You can educate the general public, even if your church fails to do it.
You can:
• Decide to do something in line with the Lord’s will, that none should perish (2 Peter 3:9).
• Put your time and money where it counts.
• Spread the true gospel, and tell the people what will happen to them if they die without the great salvation of Jesus.

It’s no good telling them of a better life in Jesus, or of “God’s wonderful plan” – most are quite happy as they are. Only when the fact registers they’re lost sinners bound for a lake of fire, will they repent and turn to Jesus.
