The 23rd Psalm is a classic from generation to generation. It is acclaimed, loved, widely read, comforting, endearing and a revelation.
Using the exposition of an unknown author, I will go on to add my commentary on each of the expositions outlined below.
The Lord is my Shepherd (1)
- That's Relationship!
David the author of this Psalm knew what he was talking about. He was a shepherd dedicated to his sheep, feeding them, protecting them from wild animals that came for free lunch. He put his life on the line for his sheep. In this Psalm David is not saying the Lord is a Shepherd, or our Shepherd, but ‘MY’ Shepherd. He knew God so intimately as to call Him, ‘My Shepherd’.
For anyone to enjoy this psalm to the full, they must have a similar relationship with the Lord. This is what brings the confidence that oozes and exudes from David as he pens this psalm.
We thank God for Jesus in that this relationship is now freely available to ‘whosoever will.’ No one can come to the Father except through Jesus. He said, ‘I am the way the truth and the life. I am the Good shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep.’ He said, ‘Whoever comes to me I will in no wise cast away. ‘.’As many as received Him, he gave the power to become children of God.’ ‘He who has the Son, has the Father and he who does not have the Son does not have the Father.’

God longs for a relationship with man. That was why it broke his heart when Adam fell. He went to great lengths to make a provision to bring man back in to the fold. ‘God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’ And this life is in His Son- Jesus Christ. It was a great price He paid to redeem us. And it was because of His great love for us that it ‘pleased Him to bruise His Son.’

Therefore enjoy your relationship with God with utmost gratitude if you do have one with Him. It is important to note that you were saved for a purpose-His purpose. Find out this purpose and live for it. Besides, every relationship can be cultivated, leading on to a greater intimacy. Just as the outward man perishes but the inward man can grow daily, so is our relationship with the Lord. It can increase, abound, improve and deepen. So may it be with you and me.

If you do not have this relationship, then His word to you is: ‘Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens, I will come in and dine with him and he with Me.' The latch is on the inside. Only you can open the door. He will not force Himself in. So today if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart. Let Him in. and you will have PEACE WITH GOD. Your name will be written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. You would pass from death unto life. Heaven will become your home. You will become a citizen of Heaven. You would have begun eternal life from the moment you make this decision. The angels in heaven will be rejoicing because of the bold step you take.
You will become a New Creature in Christ Jesus, the old will go and the NEW will come!
