"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21
As a mother, these verses remind me that my true treasure is not our home, our animals, our van, or any of our things~ which can all be broken into or stolen, but my treasure is the children God has blessed us with.
Early on, we lost two babies to miscarriage. Though it broke my heart to never hold or know those precious babes, I was, and continue to be comforted by the knowledge that I will have eternity with them ~ Treasure stored up in heaven.
Psalm 127 tells us that children are an heritage, a reward from the Lord. This scripture comes to mind again and again in my daily life. As I watch my oldest reading his Bible, without being told to, or when I read an article on faith that he's written for his newsletter. When one of my small children prays earnestly for someone in need, or continually prays for the salvation of family members.
The calm and peace that little arms bring as they encircle my neck in a hug or, when the baby smiles at me when I'm having a rough day. The leap my heart gets when my 2 year old says, "I love you, Mama." The smile that comes as I hear the children trying to sing a hymn or chorus that we're working on.
The peace that comes as I sit in my rocker and nurse the baby, and she falls asleep in my arms.
The unbelievable, heart-bursting joy that I experience as each of my children has prayed and asked Jesus into their hearts.
I could go on, but, the point is, nothing that money can buy can bring you such joy, and, obviously, nothing we own is going to make it to heaven, no matter what we do.
Our children are truely an heritage, and a treasure, because we can make an eternal difference in their lives and we can live together, forever in heaven. I praise God that He has given me the opportunity ~ and responsibility, to lay up my treasure in heaven.
