Webster’s dictionary defines evidence as, that which demonstrates a fact is so; testimony; proof; witness, is in the evident. Evident is defined as: to prove or to try by experiment; to test; to establish the truth or reality of; to demonstrate; to turn out to be. In other words, your actions demonstrate and bare witness as proof of the reality of your heart. In a court of law, evidence is often used to determine the truth of alleged facts. It backs up,substantiates, or shows validity of the grounds being given to prove a point.
If someone was to look at your life, could they see evidence of your faith? In other words, does your walk show proof, testimony, or bare witness to your profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ? Or would they see evidence of your wavering belief? What type of testimony are you living before your family? Is it a life under stress, anger, rejection, and depression? Do you pray and then worry about what you just prayed about? The evidence is evident to you as it is to those who come in contact with you.
In the Book of Hebrews chapter 11 verse 1 it states: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith is the substance could also be read as; faith is the grounds/confidence that we have in that which we can’t see, but know is there. Our confidence in what we hope for is substantiated by the word of God. It is the grounds for which we have our belief. If God said so, it is so, because He has the power and authority to make it so as it is according to His will. Ah! There is the key for our belief, to pray according to His will.
This is Christ’s spirit operating through us. It defies all human logic and reaches beyond normal boundaries of belief. It’s not what we say, but what we do with our faith. Our decisions determine our destinies. If we commit to self examination we might notice those times when we fluctuate between faith and flesh choices. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (James 1:22)
The difference between our walk and our talk will show others the wide gap between our belief and behavior. What good are your words when your actions don’t back them up? “Do what I say not what I do” is no longer acceptable in today’s society. “Say what you mean and mean what you say”, is a better analogy to represent walking out our beliefs. People will respect us more when they see us walk out our faith, and not just talk about our faith. What we think affects what we say; what we say affects how we will act; how we act affects our character and our character affects our destiny. It will also dictate how others will perceive and respond to us. It all begins with our thoughts, so what directs our thoughts? One might say our faith; but faith is not so much a way of thinking, but a way of acting. Faith activates our aspirations; the life based on the unseen realities. Faith cannot be a theory, but an action in the face of consequences. Faith and fear are like light and darkness, they are not compatible. Fear will prevent us from walking by faith. Fear is based in self preservation, which is good to the point when the decision of fight or flight is immanent. Fear can be an overactive response which prevents our faith from taking action. Put fear back in its proper place. Accept without rationalization or excuses what the Bible teach us about fear. God can turn around our circumstances, if we allow Him to. Our words of faith can take us higher, but our negative actions can hold us in a state of bondage.
Now is the time for self examination; “are you walking in the plan of God for your life, or are you stumbling around in the dark?” Search your heart, as well as the word of God to find out how to apply God’s word to your walk of faith. The Bible says to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. (Philippians 2:12) God does all the work in us, giving us the will to do what He wants us to do. This is the obedience God expects of us; it does not mean we work to earn our salvation; we simply put forth real effort into our Christian lives to show evidence of our faith walk, in every area of our lives. God wants us to be changed and He wants those changes to be evident to the world around us. Our faith needs to be evidence of goodness, knowledge, self control, perseverance, godliness, kindness and love. (2 Peter 1:5-7)
