PERMISSIVE WILL

When something happens to someone good
People begin to blame the Lord.
“Why did He do this?” is what they ask,
Did we fall prey to His mighty sword?

If only they knew and understood
That He did not want this evil done.
He’s allowing the world to follow its heart
Whether or not they follow His Son.

“Permissive will” is the term we use
To describe Him in tragic times.
“His will”, and “Thy will be done”
Can ring confusing chimes.

He is perfect, and created us in His image
But allowed us to have a choice.
Adam and Eve had paradise in hand
But they listened to Satan’s voice.

From that day when Eve fell short
And tasted of the forbidden fruit,
Man has been tempted and fell short again--
We seem to keep following suit.

We are given the opportunity only once
To follow Him, or to fall.
Some will choose to walk Satan’s path,
Others for the Lord will stand tall.

Paths will cross in this walk of life
Between those of either stand.
Satan wants to thrash us well,
Make us let go of our God’s hand.

Until the time when He comes again
We will face these tragic events.
Satan runs rampant in our midst
As with Eve, and ever since.

But we, as children of our God and King
Stand firm in the hope of Life!
No matter what he does on earth
We’ll not live in eternal strife.

For we have victory over all he does
Since Jesus paid it all.
I’ll live my life for the One sacrificed
Until the trumpet sounds my call.

Blame God? No, not a chance.
Angry with Him? No, I just understand
That He allows the world to decide…
And I choose to take hold of His hand.

Permissive will…we need to realize
That He is in the ultimate command.
All these things that happen now
Will be clearer in Heaven’s Land.

I can’t imagine not having hope
Of seeing the ones I love,
Of knowing there will come a time
When we’ll gather in Heaven above.

That makes the pain we feel
A little less tragic to bear,
When we know they are preparing the way
For when we’re called up there.

Blame God? No, but I can say
That I cry out in times of despair.
I don’t understand the ways of the world
And I sometimes ask God, “Are You there?”

Then I’m gently reminded that He is…
“You could have stopped this”, I say with feeble voice.
“Yes, my child, you are right…
But remember I gave the world a choice.

Your hope is in Me and nothing more.
You will understand in the end.
Trust in Me until your final days
Then an eternity with them you’ll spend.”

So for now “permissive will”
Is really all I need to know.
Allowing the world to make a choice…
What direction will we go?

Lucy - This is very good. There are many people who blame God for everything bad that happens. It's funny though (or not so funny, really) how these same people never praise Him for the good things that happen to them. They usually take all the credit or call it "luck" We know better, Thank God! This is my favorite verse of this poem: "For we have victory over all he does
Since Jesus paid it all.
I’ll live my life for the One sacrificed
Until the trumpet sounds my call."
AMEN - Keep writing for His glory,

Julia

Lucy, you have some very good thoughts here. So many times people wonder why God is allowing them to suffer. I always think of Job. God did not bring the suffering, but He allowed Satan to test him. God also said to Satan "Have you considered my servant Job?" He went on to say that there wasn't a more upright man alive; yet God let him go through the testing. Besides restoring to him everything he lost, during his suffering, God made sure that this account was written down for the people in all the generations since, so that they could know that God always has a purpose in the pain that comes to us. Very good, Lucy. Hope your arm gets better soon. Helen
