“And the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’”—Gen. 2:18

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”—Psalm 46:1

Notice here that the word used in reference to God and the woman is of the same form. The same is true in the original Hebrew. As God named woman helper, in like manner He named Himself.

Now seeing how the Bible talks of man, or woman, to be patterned after God, I would say that the woman is to be a helper to her man, as God is to him. How does God provide help?

Intimate Friend
Counselor

Now notice the adjective used in regard to her being a helper: ‘comparable’. This indicates a counterpart, someone of like nature, yet a complement to the one being helped. This is probably where many believers of the Old Testament derive the idea of each person having a special planned for them by the Lord, unless that person is destined for a life of celibacy.

Here’s an idea that came to me as I looked at this verse a certain back: Many see the idea of the woman being called man’s helper offensive. This is because of a misunderstanding. When someone refers to themselves as my help, it is because I need help. Helpmates are meant for those needing help. Man needs help. I need help.

Someone once said, on the basis of the passage of Genesis, that woman came from man's rib, to be at his side. If God wanted her to be his slave, He would have produced her from his feet. On the other hand, if she was meant to be his boss, she would have came from his head. The idea of comparability includes equality. What many fail to see, including men, is that one can be equal, while being different. Woman is different from man, but still equal. They are equal according to need, as well as desire and intellect. The difference not only lies in gender, but also in personality, with its talents and assets.

And just as God made Himself to be available to help man, so He set out to make woman a way for him to gain this help. It is the kind of help God would provide, according to His gracious nature.
