TRASH & TRESPASSES
I was reading my email recently and one in particular stood out in my mind. It listed several funny Biblical “misquotes” by children in a Sunday School class. One read, “Forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets.” I giggled….then thought about how each and every one of us ought to pray that child-like prayer!
We all have trash. It’s part of our day to day existence. Part of housekeeping is throwing out the trash. We roam room to room, gathering bags of dirt and garbage to get out of our sight, out of our homes. Garbage stinks. It’s unsightly. It’s unclean.
What happens to the garbage when we throw it into the cans outside? It’s hauled away….far away from our homes in a place all its own. Never to be touched or smelled or seen again by those who threw it away. We avoid going to…the dump. It’s unpleasant! It makes us feel…gritty, grimy, dirty.
We all have….”trash baskets” as the little girl referred to them. Trespasses. Sins. Things in our life that we do that are unclean. Things that are unsightly. Ugly. Smelly. Dirty. Things we say or do that we’d like to forget about. That we’d like others to forget about. Things we’d like God to forget about. And get rid of. Never to be seen again, heard again, said again, or felt again….in other words, “taken to the dump”. Forgiven.
Not only do we have our own “trash” to contend with, but the trash others “dump in our baskets”. We not only feel dirty and grimy about what we do….but about what others do to us. The garbage can be a little, or it can be a lot. No matter. It stinks. And we feel the results.
Have you ever had a rotten potato in your kitchen? It really stinks! And sometimes after you remove it and toss it outside, the smell lingers around for a while. It leaves a lasting “impression”. That’s what happens when others throw trash in our baskets of life. We have to carry them, dispose of them, clear the air….and it can be a big mess at times!
What kind of physical, verbal, emotional, or behavioral trash do you need to toss out? Get rid of? Never to be seen again? What trash have you tossed in others’ baskets for them to contend with? Are you feeling unclean? Dirty? Grimy? Is there a “lingering smell” of trash in your life? Do you want to feel free of the trash?
Jesus made a way for you to do just that when He walked up Calvary’s hill. He suffered from all of our trash on that cross. He carried the burden of all our waste, our dirt, our grime and grit so that we could become clean before a Holy God. So that we would never have to look at our sins again. Forgiven. Taken to the dump…..disposed of. He clears the air and empties our baskets day after day. All we have to do is simply…ask. Ask Him to expose our trash, contend with our trash, and take the trash of others that we still carry. To forgive us of….our trash baskets.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t like trash. I want a clean house. Free of dirt and grit and grime. Void of unsightly garbage. A house that smells good. I hope my life is that way. I trust in Jesus to keep emptying my baskets…day after day. Moment by moment. Because without Him, my baskets would overflow…..
Job 14:16-17 Surely then, you will count my steps but not keep track of my sin. My offenses will be sealed up in a bag…you will cover over my sin.
