The Whole Truth And Nothing Else

The orders had been received. Although we were an organized military unit, each person received orders assigning them to an active duty unit or a National Guard unit from a state other than Oklahoma. Though sad, we decided to make the best of the situation by celebrating our assignments by having our final meal as a unit at the Cattleman’s Steak House on the south side of Oklahoma City in the stockyard district a mile or two south of the downtown area. Seated in this famous restaurant, I was so hungry began eating salad and drinking lemonade. Soon I found myself stuffed. After about 20 minutes of waiting for the main meal, the steak, baked potato and bread arrived. I couldn’t eat a single bite. I asked for a to-go container.
“Say soldier, you haven’t eaten anything,” said an elderly gentleman sitting in the booth across from ours. “That’s a mighty good looking steak from where I’m sittin’. An entire section of diners glanced at me.
“Yes, sir! Right now, I full of that huge salad right now. I’ll either eat this later or I’ll give it to our dog.” At that point, I wished I’d never mentioned dog as I did not even have a dog to speak of. The next thing I knew, the man hobbled over to my side of the table and dumped off his plate onto my barely cooled steak dinner his scraps and bone. “There you go soldier, more goodies for the pooch, eh!” he said with a friendly smile.
Everyone got a big laugh out of the steak dinner I did not get, and my buddy’s dog was more than likely going to be one happy canine. And I learned a lesson I needed to learn… tell the whole truth and nothing but the whole truth. It will indeed set you free in many more ways than you can even begin to imagine!
