What does it mean to worship God in spirit and in truth?
These are my thoughts on that subject. First, what does it mean to worship? Worship is to love and revere an object or person, to give high honor. So what does it mean to worship in spirit? For the Christian this could mean that we worship by the leading and enabling of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. It could also mean to worship with passion or enthusiasm as the Holy Spirit, for whether this is something we should do or are able to do as Christians, God does not command us to do something that He will not also help us to do. To worship in spirit could also mean to worship with our spirit; our heart, our soul, our passion. This means sincerity and not just some show, a sincerity that should mark our lives in many ways when we know the truth of God.
This brings us to the second part. What does it mean to worship God in truth? It means simply that we as His children must have a right or true understanding of Who God is. We cannot worship Him with false ideas or images, but we must worship Him as He is as He has revealed Himself to us in His word and in Jesus Christ. Too many today have gotten false ideas of God. They see Him as weak but loveable or as holy and just but unloving. We as His church must have a right understanding of who God is if we are to accurately reflect Him to others. A good place to start is the attributes of God. Find out what the Bible says God is like.
