Moving Mountains

Have you moved any mountains lately? I haven't either. Jesus tells us in the book of Matthew “if we have faith as small as a mustard seed, we can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” I can honestly say that this passage takes on deeper meaning when I look out my bedroom window and see the magnificent Rocky Mountains of Colorado. I know a lot of people with great faith but the mountains stay right where they are. Should I conclude that they do not have enough faith?

Something seems to happen when we look at scripture and try to identify with God’s message in our human minds. In my own life, for example, there are times when I accomplish, what I consider, great things but later understand that it was not through anything that I could do alone that great things happened, but through God’s blessing that allowed me to witness them first hand.

In my opinion, we get tripped up when we start believing we have enough faith. Even the disciples who walked with Jesus questioned why they couldn’t stop the seizures from taking place in the little boy. I believe that Jesus described the size of a mustard seed to illustrate that we are not meant to physically move a mountain or to do great or heroic things at will. The mustard seed symbolizes that little faith can do miraculous things when we willingly go where God leads. Our faith will continue to grow into something magnificent, even spectacular when we understand that we are powerless without His guidance.

My Personal thoughts:
I don’t ever want to become complacent in my faith because that’s where I’m sure to find doubt, fear, and sin. I don’t want to settle for a mustard seed or grain of sand when it comes to my faithfulness, I set my sites on the mountain; eternity.

Prayer to the Father:
Abba – Father, thank You for this day. Thank You for the mountains and the valleys of my life. Thank you for the daily reminders of Your faithfulness and promises. Father, keep me close to You each day so that I don’t become vulnerable to the evil one or complacent in my studies which makes me lose sight of You or Your mission. Help me to understand Your personal message as I read my Bible and help me Lord to witness to others with love and compassion instead of arrogance and self-righteousness. I pray that in all I do, I glorify only You. This I humbly pray in Jesus name. Amen.

Scripture:
Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you.”
