What the Word Says
Paul prayed: 16I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit. New Living Translation
Eph3:16
16May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the [Holy] Spirit [Himself indwelling your innermost being and personality]. Eph3:16 Amplified
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day 2 Cor.4:16 NIV
Strength from above
Inner strength is strength that is not apparent. It is mental or spiritual. Whereas mental strength depends on your knowledge, exposure or experience, spiritual strength is from above and depends on your relationship with God and this is what I will be focussing on.
Spiritual strength is supernatural strength that makes you stand out head and shoulder above the rest; it is being powered and propelled by the Holy Spirit as you allow Him. Samson is a great example. Separated for the plans and purposes of God from birth he was remarkable in his physical prowess, yet he could not be said to have great macho physique otherwise it would be foolish to ask where his strength came from. Samson’s strength was from above but it was demonstrated physically unlike Goliath who was built a human fighting machine.
And it was by the grace of God that Goliath fell. ‘Not by might nor by power, but by the Spirit of the Living God.’
In the same way, the only strength that will last is the inner strength that comes from the Holy Spirit. God ‘does not delight in the strength of a horse nor in the legs of a man.’ ‘Cursed is he that trust in the arm of the flesh.’ That is why Paul boasted in his weakness, saying ‘when I am weak then I am strong.’ The strongest of us is weak without God. And the weaker we are in our self, the stronger we are in the hands of God. Whenever we are strong in our own eyes, we become weak in God. That is why it is written: ‘but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits’ Dan 11:32 Thanks be to God who always causes us to triumph. (2 Cor.2 14) Greater is he that is in us that he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4) He is able to do exceeding abundantly far above all that we can ask, think, imagine- far beyond our wildest dreams. (EPhe 3:20) ‘Eye hath not seen ear has not heard neither has it entered the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love Him.(1 Cor 2:9) Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; (2 Cor. 3:5)
Every man can crack crumble, and be crushed when the pressure is on. It depends on the degree of the pressure. To stand amidst the ferocious onslaughts of the powers of darkness, something inside must be very strong. We must hold on to Him - the Greater One on the inside. So long as we rest on Him, trust Him,drink from His river of life, hear from Him, hold on to Him, He will take us to the other side.
‘Cause Something Inside So Strong!
Denied, dammed, defamed
Dried, diseased, drilled,
Yet determined, undeterred,
‘Cause something inside so strong!
Battered, banned, broken
Buried, barricaded, embattled
But blood-bought and bold
‘Cause something inside so strong!
Fallen seven times, counted out for nine
Foes stealing, fleeing with what is mine
Yet I see the Sun of the Son beyond the cloud
‘Cause something inside so strong!
Plenteous mercy for the righteous
Beautiful bounty, beyond the battle
A song of songs in the night, in the valley
‘Cause something inside so strong!
Tried, cried, sighed almost died
Distanced, drained, divided
Raped, naked, homeless, disgusted
Fettered, yet an eagle bound to mount
‘Cause something inside so strong!
The Greater One inside is bound to rise
Born to soar like an eagle, born to win
Born to use ferocious winds as lifts
Born to breakthrough every barrier
‘Cause something inside so strong!
So bring it on, let us roll on!
No matter all your wrongs
I will never lose my song
I am crossing over before long
‘Cause something inside so strong!
Inner strength is fed and fuelled by prayer and fasting, the Holy Spirit the word of God, and intimacy with God. It will be tested to strengthen it further or to expose our weakness. It can be lost once we depend on ourselves.
