Salt of the Earth
By David Wiseman

“You are indeed the salt of the earth; but if the salt should lose its savor, with what could it be salted? It would not be worth anything, but to be thrown outside and to be trodden down by men.” Matthew 5:13 (Lamsa)
Usually, people teach that this verse means that we preserve the earth, that we season it. Yes, that is true. But there is much, much more than that. The mystery of this parable is made even more mysterious by Luke 14:34-35. “Salt is good; but if the salt lose its savor, with what can it be salted? It is good neither for the ground, nor for fertilizing; but it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear let him hear.” (Lamsa)
It isn’t good for the ground? But Matthew 5:13 says it is to be thrown out and trampled.
Numbers 18:19, “All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.” (KJV)
This explains the mystery. “You are in deed the salt” meaning a salt covenant, an eternal covenant with the Father. “You are indeed the salt of the earth” meaning the salt that sets the earth aside as a heave offering to Him, because the offerings were to be salted, according to Leviticus 2:13.
So believers are a priestly covenant, as in Numbers 18:19, believers are actually priests, as Revelation 5:10 says, “And has made them for our God kings and priests; and they shall reign on the earth.” (Lamsa)
Believers salt the earth as a firstfruits offering, as in Leviticus 2:14, when the salted meat is offered, “And if thou offer a meat offering of thy firstfruits unto the LORD, thou shalt offer for the meat offering of thy firstfruits green ears of corn dried by the fire, even corn beaten out of full ears.” (KJV) This is just like the earth was created at firstfruits, according to Genesis 1:1. It is a firstfruit offering.
This also throws light on Colossians 4:6, “Let your conversation be gracious, seasoned with salt, and you should know how to answer every man.” Every word should be a covenant with, and an offering to, the Father.
