The God Chronicles
How does one capture the essence of God? Is it even possible? Where would you even begin? In pondering writing such a thing, it occurred to me that this is a difficult subject, yet one that is so very dear to me. So we search our lives and try to pick out things that prove to us beyond any doubt that our God is very real and very present.
As I sit here, the rain is pelting against the metal roof of my house. Thunder vibrates the foundation. Electric bolts surge through the sky. I stop and ponder for a long moment. I ask myself how it is that non-believers can explain such a phenomenon. Do they really believe this is happening by chance? According to them (and I speak from experience) everything that happens is a random occurrence. Unexplainable, they say, it just happens. Earthquakes just happen; destructive hurricanes just happen; tsunamis just happen. PLEASE!! It is so very apparent to me exactly what is going on here. There is a far greater power at work than is even imaginable. A power capable of things we couldn’t even begin to dream up. But it’s all chance. Mother Nature, they say. I laugh at that one. Mother Nature? I hardly think so. Yet, they can go to bed at night, and even if they feel thankful for something or sad about something, who can they tell it to? It’s a shame to think they may be grateful for something and can’t seem to think of who to thank for it.
I personally attribute everything to our God. I gaze in absolute awe when I drive to work every day and see the sun rise. It’s a spectacle I am very aware of, because I know its creator. I smile and stare for the longest time (though it’s not such a good idea while driving) just thinking about what God has given us. Another day is dawning and another chance for opportunity awaits us.
But one of my favorite things to see is a rainbow, a bright and dazzling hue of color high above that is makes me shiver because I know what it means. How fortunate are we who believe in this creator. How utterly sad for those who don’t. Who can look at a strikingly beautiful butterfly and think those lovely colors and patterns just happened by chance? How absurd!!
In a hopeless world (and it’s people who make it that way), there is hope in our God and we recognize that. We can smile and rejoice at an amazing world, a world that God created for us to enjoy.
