Faith
Prayer – the Master Key
Tunde A. Dawodu
“…He that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord” (James 1:6-7).
We all face crises of varying intensities and duration on daily basis, and we often wonder whether it’s due to some sin that we’ve committed, or they’re being used of God for our advancement in life. The fact that we can experience crises both for our sins and for our progress in life means that we can have both “pleasant” and “unpleasant” crises. But a crisis is a crisis, and it is a crisis. The relief, however, lies in the fact that we can always pray to God to know His mind concerning what we’re going through and what He’ll have us do.
A young man who had searched for job for seven years simultaneously received offers from two leading merchant banks, each offering mouth-watering salary package. The man suddenly had a crisis of choice on his hand (a pleasant crisis!).
When he approached his church pastor for ‘advice’, the man of God turned sharply to him in disbelief.
“Advice?” the pastor asked. “We’d better put it into prayer.” Prayer! Is there anything we can really do without prayer? Prayer. It is one Master Key that opens innumerable doors. It even opens heaven! But one thing is this: when you turn it in the direction of that heaven you must believe it will open.
An analogy should help us here. You can hold a physical key and still doubt whether or not it will open the door it is intended for, that is whether or not it is the right key to that door. It may and it may not be. Faith is not the matter here. It just has to be the right key.
When you take the spiritual key, that is prayer, such a doubt should not exist. You just have to believe it will open the door to that which you want. That makes the difference. But there is a similarity, anyway. With earthly doors, even when you are sure you’ve got the right key, you still have to physically push the door open after you’ve turned the lock.
With a spiritual door, after you’ve unlocked it with your prayer, the push you give to open it is the faith you back your prayer with. In this sense, prayer and faith are inseparable brothers, and because they must always walk side by side, it can be said that while prayer is the key that unlocks the door of heavens, faith pushes the door open.
“But without faith it is impossible to please
him: for he that cometh to God must believe
that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
