What is wisdom?
Wisdom is the correct application of knowledge, whereas understanding is the ability to know how the knowledge you have related to one another. It is having the right perspective. This was why the people of Israel knew the acts of God whilst Moses understood His ways. He knew why God did what He did. Therefore wisdom and understanding are important in life.
Blessed is the man who finds wisdom,
the man who gains understanding,
14 for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.
16 Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her;
those who lay hold of her will be blessed.( Prov3:13-18)

Just as gold is not easily found on the road so is the wisdom and understanding that comes from God. Even when you have found a site that is awash with gold it does not just float on the surface. You have to did deep, invest, pay the price for the possible prize, have faith, persevere, endure hardship till you find your gold. And even when you find it does not come refined. You have to do some more work before your joy is full when you make that sale. That joy may be short-lived unless you keep digging deeper and searching. Surely, wisdom is valuable hence its scarcity.

God is the source of wisdom and understanding that is pure, peaceful, gentle reasonable, full of mercy, full of good fruits, unwavering and without hypocrisy (James3:13-18) Any other wisdom is a letter bomb waiting to explode and consume its harbinger. This was why God warned:
” This is what the LORD says:
"Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom
or the strong man boast of his strength
or the rich man boast of his riches,
24 but let him who boasts boast about this:
that he understands and knows me,
that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,"
declares the LORD” Jer9:23-24

King Solomon, the wisest man on earth, said, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight."(Prov.9:10)

Surely in an age where pornography is portrayed as ‘freedom of expression’, homosexuality paraded as ‘alternative life style’, evil is dressed up as good and good is hidden in the cupboard, abortion is white-washed as ’post-conception birth control’ and lawlessness and licentiousness is labeled freedom we badly need the wisdom of God that is from above.

To get the wisdom of God, firstly, we must fear Him. This means acknowledging Him, embracing Him, His Soon, Jesus Christ and His word and living for Him.
Paul said ‘Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may be come wise.’(1Cor.3:18)
Secondly, we must ask for this wisdom. Although God is the source of Wisdom, knowing Him does not automatically give us wisdom. It brings us to the vicinity of wisdom. We must acknowledge that we do not know in a certain area of life where wisdom has eluded us.
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like the wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double –minded man, unstable in all his ways." (James 1:5-8)

The word of God is also a source of the wisdom that is reliable. Is would be foolish and a misnomer to accept God and ignore His word. In the light of these scripture:

"I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;
before the "gods" I will sing your praise.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple
and will praise your name
for your love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
your name and your word.
Psalm138:1-2
96 To all perfection I see a limit;
but your commands are boundless.

97 Oh, how I love your law!
I meditate on it all day long.
98 Your commands make me wiser than my enemies,
for they are ever with me.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.
100 I have more understanding than the elders,
for I obey your precepts.
101 I have kept my feet from every evil path
so that I might obey your word.
102 I have not departed from your laws,
for you yourself have taught me.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light for my path. Ps119:96-105

God's Judgments Are True

The revelation of God is whole
and pulls our lives together.
The signposts of God are clear
and point out the right road.

The life-maps of God are right,
showing the way to joy.
The directions of God are plain
and easy on the eyes.

God's reputation is twenty-four-carat gold,
with a lifetime guarantee.
The decisions of God are accurate
down to the nth degree.

God's Word is better than a diamond,
better than a diamond set between emeralds.
You'll like it better than strawberries in spring,
better than red, ripe strawberries.

Psalm 19:7-10 The Message

Then shall we know,
if we follow on to know the LORD.

Hosea 6:3 KJV
My people shall know my Name;
therefore they shall know in that
day that I am He that doth speak.

Isaiah 52:6 KJV

I thank thee o Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because Thou hast hid these things from the wise and the prudent and hast revealed them unto babes.

Matthew 11:25

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an
understanding, that we may know Him that is true; and we are in
Him that is true, even in His Son, Jesus Christ.
1 John 5:20
When wisdom is misdirected it becomes foolishness. This was why Solomon's ship hit these icebergs: misused wealth, mixed worship and multiplied women which eventually tarnished his testimony and ruined him. It is a sobering lesson even for those who know the Source godly Wisdom.
