Family
I was working from home in front of my computer when my almost 3-year-old baby, Angel, suddenly cried. She walked up to me and embraced me tightly. She curled up in my lap and pointed to her little buttocks. I then carried her to the comfort room, washed her, and prepared her a drink to sip.
I played with Angel for a while, and then maneuvered back to my keyboard. A few hours later, her 9-year-old brother Paul would arrive from school. I'd prepare our lunch if my wife is not around and we'll eat together. And then a bit later, I'd put them to sleep before I return to my home office area.
While working from home, my wife Imelda is easily able to call me into the dining table when breakfast, lunch, or dinner is ready. I'm just a few steps away. Because she also works at home, we get a chance to deal with crises at once. When working in a traditional office or a far away place, these family crises wait for you even until it can be too late.
During moments like all these, I relish my decision to leave the hustle and bustle of daily commuting and traditional employee work. As Jeff Berner in his book, "The Joy of Working from Home" would put it, working from home "makes a life for you while making a living." Of course, I do part of my work seeing people and doing things outside home. But it's the freedom to make my own schedule and determine my own level of income that makes life a better experience.
In my own country, thousands of my countrymen leave their families behind to work overseas. We have actually become the 2nd largest labor-exporting country in the world. Millions of dollars sent by these overseas workers to their families boost the national economy. But alongside this is a very high social cost that strikes at the very fabric of society. Thousands of families, marriages, and children's lives are damaged due to absentee parents and spouses.
World statistics also show the rise of broken marriages and families in various places. About 25% to 40% of marriages and families today are broken. Here we are talking about millions of people being affected. Regardless of age, many children of broken families have never fully overcome the adverse effects of family disruption.
Family time is thus one big reason why working from home can make the world a better place. In a world where the numbers of broken marriages and families are on the rise, working from home provides a healthy life balance and family solution. The freedom to control your own time and level of income can indeed make an enriched life for the family possible.
Friend, it's your turn to join the revolution!
