Are there things you've done or failed to do that you regret?

The feelings of regret do happen to all of us. After all, we're human. That's another way of saying we're imperfect. Much of regret happens slowly and almost imperceptibly. Then, after sometime,we may begin regretting the chances we have lost. There were words unsaid, deeds undone.

Regret may be like the dark of the night. One may panic or obsess over regret. Others simply ignore and not examine it because of the pain. Because of regret, people may choose to lead lives of inaction. And those that do become like stones that exist but don't live.

But we can also be proactive. It's not the end of the world. Our gravest mistakes are not the end of life. No matter how we blundered, we can always turn ourselves around. We can profit from our past. We can choose to become like the lotus blossoming majestically out of the mud.

We need to refocus our regrets to opportunities for growth. We need an open receptive heart where something can happen to us. The powerful possibilities of growth first require the reality of solitude. To make the most of our regrets, we first need stillness, not further activity. We need to create space for ourselves.

That space for deeper reflection on what has been will then be created. And, more particularly, the heart harboring regrets for loss of significance, position, or power needs to be embraced as the hopeful place. In solitude, you free yourself to do transformative work.

Make the most of your regrets. Use them as stepping stones to lead you to a better YOU. And as you do, you can smile. For the better YOU brings you to the place of new beginnings, and out of seeing new possibilities, growth can come.
