Healing
Illness comes in various forms as we know but we never know when he will knock on our door. You never know how blessed you are until you set foot in the hospital and have tour round the wards or when you have some one at home who is always sick. Yet it is different when you are on the receiving end. It is one thing to say, I believe in divine healing, it is another thing to apply it when you are sick and to know how far to go. I have had my moments in ill-health, especially when struck down by back pain that refused to go away. I have also had Asthma which disappeared after a while even though I had seen the patches on my lungs in an x-ray.
I believe God healed and still heals and will continue to heal those who put their trust in Him. I also believe that He desires that we call upon Him when we are sick, distressed, oppressed or depressed; hence at such times I remind myself that He said,
‘Be not anxious about anything but everything by payer and petition with thanksgiving make your request known to God, and the peace of God which transcends all understanding will garrison your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.’ And so I commit it to Him in prayer. I also look for other scriptures that have to do with healing such as He (Jesus) Himself took our sins and bore our sicknesses and by His stripes were healed. Isa53:4-5, 1Pet 2:24) He sent His word to heal us (Ps 103: :20) My child attend to my word , incline your ears to my sayings. They are…medicine to your body. Prov4:23, Deut I will take away sickness from your midst. I am the Lord that heals you. () ‘no plague will come near your dwelling, no disaster will come near your tent (Ps91. )
I literally apply some of these scriptures praying them like this:
‘Lord, I come boldly to the throne of grace according to your word, to obtain mercy and grace to help in time of need (Heb 4:16). Lord, this is a time of need. It was You who said, ‘Call upon Me in the day of trouble and I will deliver you.’ .. He shall call upon Me and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. With long life will I satisfy him and show him My salvation. ‘ Ps91 Show me your salvation Lord. I need you badly. Take this sickness away from me just like You said. You also said, I am the Lord God of all flesh, is there anything too hard for me? Lord my response is that, there is nothing too hard for You. Send your word Lord, and I shall be healed. You are faithful compassionate, loving and good in all Your ways. My body is Your dwelling place, Your temple, and sickness or disease have no part with it.’
Obviously, I have had to saturate my mind with these scriptures before the illness befalls me so that the Holy Spirit has something to make alive to encourage me and give me something to hold onto. Jesus said, ‘the Words that I speak to you, they are spirit and they are life.’
I know that that there is no magic formula to healing. It requires trusting god and taking Him at his word and patiently waiting for the healing to manifest. I also remind myself that once I have applied the medicine of God‘s word, the axe is as it were, is laid to the root of the tree and God was already at work, in spite of what I see in the natural. Often I thank Him before I see the result.
There have been times when I have had to go to the hospital, even then, I still pray for the doctors and medical staff, that God will show them what is wrong and use them for His purposes. That is not lack of faith. God uses Doctors. However, I still acknowledge the Lord while going there, rather than ignoring him and depending on the doctors completely. I remind myself that the doctors are human and so limited. There are things they may not see. My physical problem may be a manifestation of a spiritual, emotional condition which may elude them. They may only carry out a cosmetic exercise treating symptoms whilst the root caused remained.
Again I also realize that that whilst God works miracles as evidenced when an illness disappears instantaneously as was the case when the asthma disappeared, He does not always work miracles for us. He decides when He wills. We cannot force it on Him. True, we all like miracles, but it may not always be the best thing for us. God wants us to develop our faith muscles by taking hold of His word, meditating on it, praying it and standing until that answer comes; just like other issues in other areas of our lives. He wants us to experience Him, not just as a Saviour but also as a Healer. And our faith will be tried, just like He said. Ours is to pray, God decides how He answers. He knows best when to bring healing or miracle or even do as He chooses. There are sweet Saints who are sick and yet mightily used of the Lord. We do not have all the answers. He is God. And so we must be careful not to be judgmental on those who have not received their healing but uphold the in prayer, intercede for them.
