ADAM and EVE… POEM
By James P. Gram
When God sent rain to make things grow
The plants were left untended:
“Like weeds this whole creation blooms
It’s not what I intended”
“There’s something’s wrong, I know not what;
There’s flower and plant and tree;
And even birds and animals
A whole menagerie”
So God sat down and thought a while
“There’s something I did miss;
I need someone to till the fields
And husband all of this”
“I think I need someone like me
Who’ll live here on this site;
I’ll make an Adam, like a clone
He’ll soon set things aright”
So God took up a lump of clay
And molded him a man;
He gave him life, instructed him
“Now do the best you can”
Then God made up a special place
An “Eden” we still say;
A gift for Adam,”This is yours;
Here is where you’ll stay”
So man enjoyed that garden place
It was a perfect life;
He pruned the vines and ate the fruit
Existence without strife
But this was not to last for long
His needs were very human:
Someone to share his lonely life
God planned to make a woman
So God put Adam down to sleep
No chloroform or ether;
He took a rib and made a mate
“An Eve, one like the other”
So that is how mankind was made
With Adam and with Eve;
Life in the garden was so good
They thought they’d never leave
God said, “The whole of Paradise
Is yours to have for free;
But there’s a fruit you must not eat
It’s growing on that tree”
At first all things went really well
Too good to last, you know;
For hidden in that special tree
A serpent slithered slow
Both you and I will know that snake
Was Satan in disguise;
He told them that the apple would
Make them good and wise
The couple said, “But why would God
Deny this certain fruit?”
The snake replied, “God’s being mean
And self-absorbed to boot”
“You see, this tree has certain powers
Like knowledge, and you might
Appreciate what’s bad or good;
Go on and take a bite”
Adam thought he’d take a pass
But Eve said “Why not see
If wise and clever we become
By eating from that tree”
Well, sad to say forbidden fruit
Made both of them aware
They had no clothes, so realized
They were completely bare
That knowledge made them feel ashamed
They both had broken hearts;
They rustled round and found some leaves
To cover up their parts
To say that God was most displeased
Would understate the case;
He sought them out and told them clear
Just what they had to face
But first God dealt with lying snake,
“From now on you are cursed;
Slide on your belly evermore;
You’re lowest; you’re the worst”
“Now Eve you knew my rule but still
Enticed the man, you see?
He’ll boss you now against your will”
Your master he will be”
“Now Adam here’s your punishment
I’m going to make you sweat
In field and vineyard till you die;
You won’t like that, I’ll bet”
“But now I want the both of you
To pack your bags and leave;
You’ve spoiled this paradise, that’s why
I’m giving you the heave”
“Now that you know both good and sin
You have become a bother;
Your punishment, from here on in
Is live with one another!”
ON REFLECTION
God must have smiled when he observed
That each would blame the other;
His punishment would fit the crime
They’d share a life together
They’d procreate and make a life
With lots of acrimony;
The sexual wars got started when
They entered matrimony
