So what happens when you find yourself single and independent, worshipping in the midst of women who are married with children? You are sitting there, no husband, no kids, no responsibilities except to oneself, and the majority of your fellow church sisters are moms and wives who have to run home to keep house in a major way? What do you do? How do you deal? I mean, some days, the Single Christian Woman with No Husband and No Kids (SCWwNHNK) is praised for being a kept woman, praised for being a role-model for young women, praised for living on the pathway of excellence. On other occasions, the SCWwNHNK is sometimes compelled and maybe forced to “hide her light behind a bushel”. This occurs for the same reasons that the SCWwNHNK is praised. Because the SCWwNHNK has achieved a certain level of success and is attempting to lead a saved life, she often finds herself in the minority within the congregation, therefore not wanting to promote herself too much because others may feel that the SCWwNHNK is bragging.
Hopefully, this text can help the SCWwNHNK appreciate their role in the church, while waiting for God to send a helpmate in His own perfect time.
Thought #1: What is “the Box”?
“But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord”
----I Corinthians, Chapter 7:Verse 32 KJV
A box has so many different uses. It can help us move items from one area to another, give us a place to sit, or even serve as an emergency table. For the single woman, however, we have our own God-given box that serves as a shelter from anything that may keep us from doing His will.
For a single woman, this box serves as a structure so strong that you might begin to wonder if anyone (men in particular) can even see inside-“Why are these men ignoring me? My box must be made of steel because I can’t pay a man to get next to me”-such thoughts are common among women in this category, as they wonder if God will ever allow the box to open for a romantic relationship. It was then revealed that this “box” of security that surround the single woman should indeed be embraced instead of rejected.
“The Box” is keeping single women every minute and hour of the day. “The Box” is keeping single women year after year. “The Box” provides protection from sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted/unplanned pregnancies, mental and physical abuse from potential partners, and other hurts. I would like to think of “The Box” as God’s way of preparing us for successful lives in Christ, in the process letting our lights shine for the entire world to see. Single women do not have to be desperate, lonely, unhappy, miserable, depressed—of course, we may not have a physical man around to fulfill certain needs or even take out the trash, but our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ can come in, give us power to overcome our fleshly wants, and even give us enough strength to take out that smelly trash (both natural and spiritual).
It takes time to accept “The Box”. We see our friends and loved ones preparing for marriage, going on dates, and we sit back and say, “Why not me, Lord?” But these are the times to praise God for moments of peace. Thank God for a space in time to praise God in our singleness, and for allowing us to carve out a bright future that has its foundations rooted in the Word of God. Our “BoxTime” is where we ask God to reveal His purpose and to also relax and be thankful for a chance to grow.
