FIX
An interesting word. Webster's: 14 different meanings. Few words have that many intents. As a young boy, FIX meant to make something work again, to repair it. FIXing a bicycle. FIXing torn rawhide in a baseball glove. Putting a rubber patch on a deflated basketball. No one would tell you I was a FIX-it person. Instead, I was more of a break-it boy. A glass, a toy, a tool. Plenty of accolades for that. On the other hand was my big brother Dwight. He was truly a FIX-it person. Early in life he helped 'tinker' with cars alongside my Dad. In one of our many sheds, soon he was using a chain system to take engines of cars. He would buy an old car for $15. Work on it awhile and sell it for $25. The next one he might sell for $35. Working up to a Cadallac! Always enthusiastically learning new things about different vehicles. Dwight was the FIX-it man in our family.
FIX has another meaning---to direct steadily, to focus attention on, to CONCENTRATE ON. "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us FIX our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Heb 12:1,2. We are encouraged to focus on Jesus. Persecuted by His peers, condemned by the ruling officials, savagely crucified between two thiefs on a cross... Absolutely amazing that He considered this but joy. He knew why---solving the sin-problem and ---that He would be resurrected from death, to take His place beside the Father in heaven.
King David knew about the word FIX. "My heart is FIXed, O God, my heart is FIXed. I will sing and praise." Ps 57:7. Expressions of joy. "He shall not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is FIXed, trusting in the Lord." Ps 112:7. A life without fear, doubt, frustration can be part of our special joy as long as we FIX our attention on Jesus.
