Random act of kindness...
As we discussed Justin's homework, our cat, Kiko, surprised the three of us with a mouse- in her mouth. So I took time to chase her out of the house while my wife continued to talk to Justin. However, his attention had shifted to the cat and the poor mouse.

He followed Kiko, watching her from the doorway before going outside. Looking out the window I saw Kiko had let go of the little mouse which remained frozen in place. Shock and survival mode. I joined Justin outside and we proceeded to slide the mouse onto a shovel. Then Justin went looking for a safe place to leave our friend while I shooed Kiko away.

Once he had dropped the mouse over the fence and into onto our neighbors pile of leaves(since it was a mouse and not a rat, I didn't give it a second thought), we went back into the house to resume our homework discussion.

Something happened during this rescue because the tension over homework went away and Justin went about his business.

I felt so proud of him. The way he helped a small animal and remained patient while devising a plan of rescue was heartwarming.

During those times when I question my kid's values due to their passion towards fighting computer games and bloody Slasher flicks, I take a reality check and reflect on their random acts of kindness.
