Are You Thirsty?

Often times our natural body is thirsty and we confuse this desire and reach for something to eat. The feeling of dehydration continues so we grab a soda drink or a beer. The caffeine, alcohol and sugar increase the feeling of thirst and hunger so we eat more. How often has this cycle happened to you? Are you carrying around thirty or more pounds of excess weight because you have been feeding your desires and not supplying your body with what it needs? The continuation of this cycle will lead to health problems, self esteem issues, costly medical procedures and medications. When you refuse to obey the natural requirements of your body on a continual bases it will disrupt and steal your energy for the normal activities of your lifestyle, it will destroy every area where discipline is required for success, and then it will kill your hope, dreams, and eventually your body. I said all of this out of experience as well as from a spiritual foundation. When your body is thirsty it needs water, when your spirit is thirsty it needs the word of God. The Word is our bread of life which feeds our spirit but when we combine it with a prayer life and fellowship with the Holy Spirit it is also a well spring of life. St. John 4:14 states; “ But whosoever drinketh of the water that I (Jesus) shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” This spiritual water fortifies our spirit which feeds our mind which controls our emotions which motivates our actions. Whatever we feed will grow;
So if we feed the body in excess it will show the fruits of our labor. If we feed the spirit, the fruits of the spirit will show. Ephesians 5:9&10 says, for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth; proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. Galatians 5:22&23 list the fruits of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.

Take a personal assessment by asking yourself these questions then answer them honestly. When my spirit is thirsty am I giving it living water or am I feeding my flesh what it desires? Are you stuffing yourself with junk food? Are you drinking a lot of carbonated and alcoholic beverages? Are you feeding your sexual desires in an unrighteous way? Has your job/career taken over your life? Have you been destroying relationships or fallen into debt because you can’t be accountable for your lack of discipline? If you answered yes to any of these questions your spirit is most likely dying of thirst. If you didn’t answer yes, look over your daily routine and monitor the fruits of your labor. If we are not providing living water to our spirit daily it will show no matter how hard we try to cover it up. The error of our ways is robbing us of our life’s potential. It is like a thief whose purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy, but Christ has come that we might have life more abundantly. (St. John 10:10) Are you enjoying abundant life or are you thirsty?
