How does it happen that God always knows the exact minute that He can save you? That’s what I want to know. How can He know the exact place He needs to meet you at to break you? That’s what I want to know.

At one point in my life, I was as close to God as I could possibly be. I was focused on doing His work and being who He wanted me to be. Things were going well for me.

Then, something happened. I’m not sure what changed in me, but something both tragic and dramatic happened either in my heart or mind that caused me to second guess everything I knew to be true. The snowball effect took place. You know the one. You make one bad decision. Then another. You begin to compromise what you know in your heart to be right. Then, you start to justify your compromises. Before you know it, you’ve become someone else.

You look in the mirror and question the person looking back. Who is this person? Then, you get to the point where you can’t even look yourself in the eye. What are you going to do? Guilt starts to plague you. You start going to church less and less because the conviction is more than you can stand. Then, you pretty much quit going altogether. People who care about you call you, but you make up an excuse for not going. (Work always makes a good excuse.)

The trend continues. The next thing you know, it’s been six months since you went to a church service. It’s been even longer since you were part of a ministry. (You justify that by saying that you just needed a break.) After months of no accountability or blowing off anyone who tries to offer you any, you become someone you don’t even want to be around. Your language changes. Your attitude changes. Your thoughts change. And your heart hardens.

Then, one day, you’re driving down the highway listening to the radio. You begin to station hop. Nothing on the dial suits your mood. You begin to fill a stirring in your spirit. You begin to see visions of all your bad decisions flash in and out of your mind. The tears begin to fall down your cheek. They start slow at first. Then, they become a steady stream. You have to pull over because the tears are filling up in your eyes faster than gravity can pull them down your cheek.

You know the time has come for you to have that much-needed talk with God. You know you should have had this talk months ago. You begin to wrestle with the words you know to say. You try to justify the delay and your actions. But there is no excuse. You reach into the CD case and pull out the CD with that one song you most need to hear or sing out to God. You think, God knows my heart. Now, if I could just bring myself to say the words. Before you know it, Jesus has intervened once again.

He has come to me you where you are at just the right time. As you confess your sins and ask for His forgiveness, you feel the weight lifted off your heart. You confess Him to be your Lord and Savior once again. You feel your heart begin to soften and your mind begins to clear. You know there’s a plan and a purpose for the events in your life. You may not know what it is, but you know that what you just went through will add to your witness so that someday, you may help someone not make the same mistakes you did.

I don’t understand how it works. I just know that it does. I don’t know how it happens. I just know that it does.
