Rahab and Ruth step out of ancient history to underscore and illustrate a remarkable truth. Rahab was simply designated, "the harlot". When the Israelite spies sought shelter from the men of Jericho, she agreed to hide them but on the condition that she and her whole family would be saved when the Israelites destroyed the city. Ruth, the Moabitess, when given a choice to return to her idolatrous home, chose to go with Naomi, a decision recorded in an oft-quoted song of devotion. Both had open, believing hearts; both loved much. Rahab had heard of the God of the Israelites and believed that He was almighty, and she sought protection not just for herself but for her whole family. Ruth had observed Naomi's life and devotion to Jehovah God and chose not to return to her idolatrous roots, but because of belief in God and love of Naomi, left it all to go into an unknown land with an unknown future. Open hearts and loving much qualified both women for singular honor in God's scheme of things. Rahab is found in the lineage of Christ, and Ruth was the great grandmother of David.

Rahab and Ruth offer living proof that God will accept, use and honor open, believing, loving hearts. The where, when and other circumstances are simply not part of the equation. Nothing else matters. The condition of the heart is the deciding factor: then, now and always. What a wonderful, freeing truth that is! Rahab and Ruth foreshadow and reflect Jesus' two Great Commandments: to love God and others. The ladies, though long dead, still speak.
