Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday May 3, 2006
Just the other day the media was reporting an upsurge in false Purple Heart Medals. Seems that knock off artists are proliferating with more precision than our president can say.
Why?
Mostly due to near innate desire to be something other than what you really are.
This compulsion hits close to home in the calling in which I have trod the globe for some 44 years. To appear to be something you are not!! I saw an add in a supposedly respectable religious newspaper offering 'Earned Doctor Of Divinity Degree' and the price was given. Seems that the compulsion to appear overly educated is evidenced by village idiots 'buying' honorary degrees and then telling other V.I’s it is 'earned.' Such is Christendom 2006. Yes, Hirsh, I have a D.D. given to honor my outstanding accomplishments in the long ago. My outstanding accomplishments being that I sent flocks of students to the college of my preference in those golden days of yesteryear.
None of which directly applies to the subject at hand today, but subtly it touches on it, like hitting a dunce with a hammer.
Ralph Harris said:
"If we stop caring about our heroes, we stop caring about what they died for."
If you ‘Selah’ pause and ponder the statement of Mr. Harris you will realize in a profound way the truth of it. When I was younger I saw images on the TV of crowds of 'Americans' spitting on American soldiers returning from Viet Nam. I listened in the coffee shop of a 'Christian' university as students ridiculed the classic, "Foxes Book Of Christian Martyrs" all the while anticipating the outrageous salaries they were expecting from serving in their professional capacities to enhance the Kingdom of Christ. Most were saying in essence that they did not want to serve in churches like the one they grew up in and for the most part made the institution of higher learning they were attending possible. And they certainly did not wish to be associated with "Doctrinal Dinosaurs."
We have now come full circle in our little talk.
Because we have glorified pagans and reprobates in American life and held up our heroes to ridicule, be they military, Christian, or even political, we no longer care about the principles for which they died.
"If we stop caring about our heroes, we stop caring about what they died for."
