Uganda, children o’ tragedy,
Under a shadow, far from eyes;
My heart is struck, to the quick,
For I can’t still their searing cries;

I saw their beauty, smooth of skin,
Hold within a terror of plight;
These are moved by other’s sin,
While they hold an ageless fright;

Bare feet befall the dusty ground,
Hidden in the African eve;
Trudge along for peace unfound,
In profane anxiety their hearts cleave;

O dear one, this must not be,
To hide from death and fell abuse;
Separated from parents, just to flee
Hands to use you for their ruse;

Behold the flesh and spirit of Your making,
Lord o’ the Bright and Morning star,
Let Your anger be righteous quaking,
And save the innocent from us afar;
Bring to Your breast the dark-skinned waif,
Beset by war and tyrant hand;
Make them all, on this plane, safe,
Reveal the sin hidden in their land;

Lord, these children are seen by You;
Bring their nocturnal flight to peaceful cease;
Make right their lives, as is due,
And give them more than temporal peace;

And I will not, for them, be quiet,
While they hide in darkened den;
My mouth will be a loving riot,
And will reveal this hidden sin.

A few years ago, in fun a group of college students went to Africa, wanting an adventure. Instead they found something that disgusted them. They came upon children, in the hundreds, even thousands, who walk miles to have to hide in basements and any safe haven, where they can simply sleep, and not fear the possibility of being kidnapped.

In Uganda, there is a 20 year civil war going on. In desperation the rebel commander has undertaken a scheme to abduct children to be soldiers forced to fight, if they are fortunate, they may escape with immense psychological scarring. Many die in battle, for they are brainwashed to be unfeeling killers.
