Larry Lilly's Letter Friday April 28, 2006

I often find ways to deal with the real 'toughies' of life through the use of humor. Guess what I'm dealing with in the following story currently making the rounds of FWDs I simply must read or risk the wrath of the Internet gods.

'A man and his wife were sitting in the living room and he said to her, "Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependant on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug."'

His wife got up, unplugged the TV and threw out his beer.

According to the media, far too many American men are 'vegging' out in front of the one eyed monster. One friend is making plans to become strong enough to be a 'couch potato' within the next six months. Most of us wonder as to whether he will make it or not, though we do admit 'couch potato' would be an improvement.

The vast majority of my readers are above average so you already know that too many American men and women waste far too much time in vain attempts to dull their minds and hearts. TV is a good way to block out all of the thinking impulses as there is usually nothing to stimulate said impulses. I recently conducted what would be termed a 'non-scientific' study into the effects of TV on our two resident canine wonders, Max and Mollie. Max and Mollie are two rescues with above average intelligence, far above military, and they are also contortionists in that they have wrapped The Great Blonde and me around their little paws. During the study I tuned the TV to a twenty four hour news program. When I returned to the ranch, the dogs were resting comfortable in the other end of the house. I then tuned the TV to Animal Planet and the dogs met me at the door waging their little tails with joy. I suppose with thankfulness that they had been spared the horrific life of some of their brothers and sisters featured on the Houston and Detroit Humane Societies rescue film.

And then one day I forgot to move the channel from the local news. While I was about town taking care of enormously important errands, at least that's what the wife of these many years called them, the TV switched to Soap Operas. The tales of woe and infidelity were still on when I returned home. The dogs met me at the door, looked back at the sordid scene unfolding on the tube and as one, they tried to bite me. And millions of people wonder what's wrong with our country. I can only imagine what these two canine connoisseurs of fine viewing would do if we tried to take away their beer.

Well, enough. I must lighten up a wee bit.

The wise know the use of our minds and hearts in a responsible manner is part and parcel of the life well lived and to waste either is tantamount to drastic failure in life. When we permit the mind of Christ to rule in us, we will not waste our time, mind or heart in trivia.
