The Word for Writers
The Writers Hand
Isaiah 44:1-5. vs.5 “One will say, “I belong to the Lord” another will call himself by the name of Jacob: still another will write on his hand, “The Lord’s”…….
As I was reading in Isaiah today these words in verse five jumped out at me. As a writer, my attention is always sparked by anything in the Bible that has to do with writing. Although the writer in this text (not of this text) writes only two words they are remarkably succinct.
“The Lord’s”. There is a wealth of information here. The writer of these words no longer considers himself a free man, nor does he hide that fact. It is written on his person for all to see. We are also told that this “brand” as it were, is not placed there by someone else. The writer himself engraves the words onto his own hand.
Earlier, in verse one of Isaiah 44, God is speaking to Israel, “Whom I have chosen.” I do not want to imply that the writer in verse five chose to be the Lord’s of his own power. I know that while we were yet sinners God chose us. I believe that the Holy Spirit calls me by the Gospel, enlightens me with His gifts and sanctifies me in the one true faith.
But, oh, how I long to respond as did this writer. To write on my hand, “The Lord’s” To see that reminder each time I sit down to put thoughts into words and words into compositions, and compositions into the public stream.
Then everything I write becomes a reflection my owner. As I belong to him, so does all that I possess belong to Him. Not my talent, His. Not my thoughts, His. I become the servant carrying out the will of the Master.
Today, I boldly wrote on my hand, “The Lord’s”, both physically and metaphorically. How simple. What a wonderful way to call all these things to mind!
Get out your pens, you called of God. Go ahead. Write it. You will never write anything more profound!
