SHAME

An empty shell, a void, no sense of being.
View the world around you without seeing
the you you really are, or only seeming,
while feeling deep inside you have no meaning.

You seek to fill the void, to numb the pain
with sex or drink or drugs, it’s all the same.
But soon you feel empty once again.
The beginning seems no different than the end

Retreat to darkest corners of your soul
Grieve for all the joy that evil stole.
Hide your heart in some forgotten hole,
hoping to avoid the painful toll.

Driven to the darkness by your fear,
shame and condemnation all you hear.
Put your dirty fingers in your ears.
Drown the sound of sorrow with your tears.

But as you close your ears and shut your eyes
to evil’s accusations and his lies,
don’t despair of hope or life despise,
the Lover of your soul will soon arise.

Even now He’s calling out your name,
wading through your misery and shame
to touch the secret hollow of your pain.
Acceptance and forgiveness unrestrained.

Long you’ve lived accustomed to the night,
shield your eyes in fear of One so bright,
afraid to have revealed to His sight
all that you’ve kept hidden from the light.

Dare to open up and look around,
no sin or shame or failure can be found.
Wonder at this mystery profound,
receive His grace and mercy and be crowned.

The you you really are has been revealed.
Receive His love and to His glory yield.
Set free by truth and by His Spirit sealed,
soon your pain and sorrow will be healed.
