What on Earth is Holiness?
What on earth is holiness?
Some say a code of "thou shalt not's"
Keep 'em, they say, and to heaven you'll get
But break those rules and your prospects are hot.
Can't wear no jewelry, not even a pin
Every saint knows that jewelry's a sin
Upon pricey treasures a saint must frown
But we are jewels in God's own crown.
Jesus was given costly ointment
But gold is a deadlier sin, is it?
Then why are heaven's streets paved with it?
And Who on earth created it?
Even if your hair gets gray as a mouse
You mustn't use color or other hair care
But it's okay to paint your house
Or re-upholster your favorite chair.
Only Jezebels paint a pale face
With fresher colors from a kit
By doing that you'll fall from grace
And you'll sink deeper into sin.
Sports are out, ban those ball games
Wrestling matches are demon displays
Then why did Paul say, Fight the good fight of faith
Don't lose patience as you run the race?
It's a sin to wear a bathing suit
Just be content to wade on the beach
The devil's in that swimming pool
Sounds like a fishy story to me.
Mustn't meet your Maker in T-shirt and jeans
But when Peter saw Jesus out on the sea
He took off his shirt and plunged into the tide
Swam to greet Him and said, "Master, it is I!"
Nothin' left for fun except to eat
Legalism's really on a roll
Pass the corn bread to Brother Pete
Don't do nothin' else, do what you're told.
Holy women mustn't ever trim their locks
Most women's hair grows this long, then stops
Some women's hair stretches round the block
Their buns piled so high they reach the house top.
Little boys are bald on the side of their head
Topped with a tiny tuft of barely there hair
It's a sin to wear a beard, it is said
But Jesus wore a moustache and beard.
If you really wanna keep Old-timey Law
Read Leviticus nineteen, verse twenty-seven
You shouldn't shave your beard at all
A head of hair won't make you miss heaven.
That verse won't let you shave your son's head
Or even trim the hair around his ears
Pay real close attention to what the Law says
And don't you dare shave off that beard.
If you wanna get back under the Law
Give up pork chops, shrimp and ham
You shouldn't tithe on money at all
Just on the produce of God's Land.
You'd have to marry your brother's wife
If without children your brother dies
Other regulations I won't mention
So I shall say with circumspection
Some laws are scary to modern men
Who wants to be under Law again?
We should rest in our redemption
From Old Law rules and prohibitions
Reject unloving things God hates
Shun the things which harm your soul
Be a heavenly-minded saint
Let the Spirit take control
Keep your eyes on eternal goals.
Seek that wisdom from above
Which clarifies things yet unclear
Walk in charity and love
Keep the Savior ever near.
Love your neighbor as yourself
Seek those things which edify
The Law can never save from hell
Lean on Christ and Him crucified.
We've missed it by a country mile
This definition of holiness
The answer's obvious, it makes me smile
Not what, but WHO, is Holiness!

I just love this piece! Tongue in cheek some of it may be but there is a solemn message here for God`s people.....We are under grace and that grace is for all peoples....How we live out our lives will impact the non-believer more than any initial sermon on biblical doctrine...Always to ask ourselves "What would Jesus do in/with this situation - is it honouring God and loving my neighbour -can I give thanks from a pure heart and conscience for this? If we can honestly answer a rejoicing "yes" we are blessed indeed in the precious liberty the Lord Jesus has won for us! He is Risen - praise the Lord!!
